The Peugeot Carbolite 103...

I am now the proud caretaker of the above Peugeot Carbolite 103. I say "caretaker" because I can't really keep it... Olly won't let me... I have my BSA... and I'm sure there is someone out there more deserving of this bike.

That said, I intend to give it a clean up & have a ride on it... and, who knows, my stewardship may last as long as the Stewards of Gondor (geek reference).

Will post pics of it all sparkly. I'm going to submit it to the old ten speed gallery.

Thanks to Alex at my work for his kindness.

New Tunes :: Massive Attack's "Splitting the Atom EP"

I'm a huge fan of Massive Attack & it was a pleasure to discover a new EP was out there... Four tracks that are some what darker than there earlier material but a natural progression from their most recent work.

The first track_ the title track_ is a dark yet jaunty little ditty that bounces all with a hauntingly repetative keys sound... a slow dubby vibe that is both familar, especially when Horace Andy's vocals come in, and disconcerting.

"Pray for rain" is similarly familiar yet haunting... a scattering backbeat underpinning the whole track & suspense- filled atmospherics creating a deliciously substantial vibe... that builds very nicely... almost hypnotically... into some excellent vocal harmonies.

"Bulletproof love" is an exciting remix_ stripped back... lean... muscular... with poignant horns in places & a firm backbeat.

And "Psyche"... the last track... is intoxicating with a beautiful ambience and Siren-esque vocals that remind me of the lassie from Fever Ray & the Knife.

Well worth checking out.

New Tunes :: Twilight's score

I know TWILIGHT isn't everyones cup of tea... but for me & mine, it's a fab story & a well executed film.

Like all well executed films... the soundtrack is an essential synergistic element... it helps to create & build the atmosphere of the moment... think PSYCHO & you'll think of the shower scene with the shadowed knife & the screaching strings_ eek eek eek etc.

For me CARTER BURWELL's score for TWILIGHT adds to the atmosphere... and I believe it stands on it's own_ as all good scores should_ as an awesome piece of instrumental music.

And it's in his choice of instruments that the genius of the score is highlighted_ dark & brooding strings_ guitars_ disembodied vocals_ powerful rhythms_ all come together to create something overpowering in both it's darkness & it's majestic beauty.

Whilst you might not "get" TWILIGHT... please do not be dismissive of it's score... it is a work of genius.

For your iPhone :: Clock02

Two things regular readers of the ol' nanolog will know:
1) I am a wee bit OCD about clock apps on my iPhone.
2) If swissmiss mentions an iPhone app I am more like than not going to buy it. I think her taste is pretty impecable.

Anyway... swissmiss features an iPhone app called the "qlocktwo" which  is the time in words. Whilst it looks stunning, it's not exact enough for me.

However, whilst searching for "clock02" I found  a sweet wee clock that has a simple yet effective interface (shown above) that I preferred to the "qlocktwo". It needs to be seen in action... I like it's idiosyncracy.

What's more... it's free. Well worth checking out.

Mini Tunnocks Wafers

I am so stoked! Just spent a couple of hours in the company of Boyd Tunnock & Annabel Goldie.

As part of the Summer School curriculum, Jon & Lorna organised an optional discussion group called "Interview with a Christian" and the first group included Boyd (the big chief at Tunnocks), Annabel (Member of the Scottish Parliament & Leader of the Conservatives in Scotland), and Ellen Watt (a staff nurse at Stobhill Hospital).

All three individuals were thoroughly engaging, spirited & animated... recounting their personal experiences in connection with their own journeys in faith.

Afterwards... we entertained Boyd, Annabel & Jim Hamilton (Boyd's friend & retired owner of Hamilton's Dairies)... and Boyd introduced us to his latest product: a tub of MINI caramel wafers (pictured above).

They are absolutely brilliant! A small wafer covered in chocolate. In fact, the chocolate percentage is 50% instead of the normal 33% for wafers... which makes them so moorish & delightful.

A brilliant product from a brilliant man.

Today has been a great day!

Fave tunes :: "Pet Sounds" :: Beach Boys

Music for me is a journey... one that runs from the unknown to the known... the unfamiliar to the familiar.

I hear about something... a new band or a new album... I check it out & in doind so... start the journey.

I believe it's important to have a healthy balance of albums at various stages in this journey. It's just as important to discover new music as it is to cherish your "classics".

Pet Sounds is a classic for me. It is a sonic blanket of comfort & familiarity. When I am down or anxious (as I am now) it picks me up & reassures me that "as long as there are stars above me" I'll be ok.

Thing is... for me... this album can't be surpassed for one reason... it doesn't feel stale. It is fresh & new... albeit familiar... on every listen. It's like someone sparying the new car smell into the same car each day. Same car... just feels new.

Sonically, it is awesome... uniquely varied & dense... with clever orchestration & vocal harmonies that are wonderfully rich & vibrant. There are some weird instrumentation in the mix that blends superbly with the more usual guitars, keys & drums... I particularly like the bicycle horn & the basoon (I think)... they add flavour to the sound.

If you don't own this album... then you should. It is worthy of it's classic status, imho at least.
